In summer we feel hot, but some days will be hotter than the other days and some of us used to think, by chance this is because of the heat wave ...right? Then are all the hot days that we particularly feel excessive hotness is due to heat wave? Not all the time...
For us to say heat wave there are some criteria, like not all cough and cold symptoms are Covid. Likewise, not all hot days are due to heat waves. In the process of knowing the terminologies....let us know the criteria for heat wave.
When you see the image on the left hand side, you might be wondering so this is it. Just with maximum temperature (maximum value of temperature attained in a day at a particular place) we can say whether a place has heat wave or not....But, you might also be wondering some of the tropical regions will have places wherein the normal temperature will be around 40 C or more. Therefore, do we consider them as heat wave?....
So to avoid this we have two criteria for declaring heat wave.
When any of the above criteria happens in 2 stations under a meteorological sub division for two continuous days, then heat wave is declared on the second day.
For coastal region the criteria has a slight variation ie., if the departure from normal is more than or equal to 4.5 deg C with a maximum temperature of more than or equal to 37 deg C.
Note: Normal is the average of 30 years temperature data of a place.
