Continentality

The word continent is not new to us, we have learnt it from when we were in school. We know that the continents are large land masses and there are seven continents at present. So, we know continent, but what is this continentality?

Let us get to know about the continentality. This is a comparative measure of the differences between climates controlled by land masses and those controlled by water (Yee Fong, 1985). The degree of continentality is directly proportional to its distance from large water bodies.

We know that land gets heated and cooled faster compared to water due to its low specific heat capacity, so the temperature variations will be greater over land compared to water. Suppose, If a place has a more continental climate then there will be large variations in the temperature and moisture regimes, which in turn influence the other weather parameters.

There are different indices available to measure the continentality of a region. If interested you can go through the links to learn more about the indices.
