Bioclimatic law?

Have you noticed in your travel that the plants that is already in full bloom at a place has just started to bloom at another place? I mean the same plant species....If not try it next time and if you have already noticed it, then have you thought of the reason?

Well, some of you might already have guessed the reason rightly...yes, it is because of climate. This means the phenological events of plants or insects or other living organisms are related to the climate they are in.

This change in flowering of plants is a good example for us to understand this, as it can be noticed easily. This change is referred by a climate know as bioclimatic law.

This law was developed by an American entomologist Andrew Delmar Hopkins. The law states that phenological events were shifted by four days for every 1° latitude north, 5° longitude west, and 400 ft of elevation increase (Hopkins, 1900, 1920).

In a simpler term we can say that the change in phenology of plants or insects or animals can be observed to the change in latitude, longitude and altitude (elevation) with respective differences.

Try to observe your surroundings and get to know the science behind it. This will amplify our interest to know more about nature and the laws that explains them.

Enjoy life with science.
