Have you ever thought of your first memory with the evergreen weather phenomena, the Rain? If not, try to get a picture of it now. Hope you tried it...
Most of our first experience with rain is from our childhood days, where most of us enjoy the rain, by grasping some of the water droplets in our hands and enjoying the sense of them or sometimes just watching them through the windows or so. It is really a good and everlasting memory. The memory may be happy or otherwise depends upon our first exposure.
We all know that the rain plays an important role in water availability. When there is good rain we all are happy, as the basic needs will be settled and there will be sustainable growth in all sectors and most importantly food security. Several ancient poems and couplets were written by our ancestors describing the importance of rain. Some of you might have heard about Thirukkural, where the author has written 10 couplets under Vansirapu (Blessing of the rain) that portrays the magnificence of rain. In one of the couplet, the author compares rain with that of ambrosia (food of the gods). I think not more is needed to emphasis further about the rain.
So, now let us get to know what we call as rain. Not all the water that falls from the clouds is categorized as rain.
We call as Rain, when the water droplet size is about 0.5 mm or more and reaches the ground. If the droplet size is less than 0.5 mm and reaches the ground, we call them as Drizzle. Apart from this, some of you might have noticed, that we can see droplets of water falling from the clouds, but it does not reach the ground (due to evaporation), those we call as Virga.
From now on you can say whether the water drops from the clouds are rain or drizzle or virga and believe it, definitely when there is a virga and your kid or friends tell them as rain, you can say them and you will have a good feel that you know the things better and can enrich their knowledge as well.
Knowing the exact terms of the things that happens around us adds to our cognizance and induce us to understand them. Stay tuned for knowing more facts!
